(This article is part of an ongoing series showing adult obsession in waging “War Against Children” by Fr. Jerry Novotny, OMI..)
Life is Beautiful. Life is Precious and Sacred. Good people believe in the sanctity of the human person with rights and dignity to be protected and preserved. Yet there are those who disagree. They declare open War Against the Unborn. But there is no “good” war. In the end, millions die and many are left crippled. Why then fight the war in the first place? The reason is that this war against the unborn is very profitable. Take for example the following event. The world was shocked when it heard that the University of Pittsburgh has been harvesting the organs of unborn babies while their hearts are still beating.
The documents were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA”. Senate candidate Sean Parnell described the allegations as “nauseating” in a statement posted to his campaign’s Twitter account: “Allegations that officials at the University of Pittsburgh were harvesting kidneys of unborn babies while they still had a heartbeat is absolutely nauseating. This goes far beyond the scope of being pro-life and pro-choice. This is an issue of good vs. evil. There needs to be a full investigation into these allegations. If there is any truth to them, people need to be fired, funding needs to be suspended, and criminal charges must be brought.”

Many articles are flooding the mass media with reports that are as chilling as your worst nightmares. In February, Judicial Watch uncovered 676 pages of records from NIH showing that the agency paid thousands of dollars to California-based ABR to purchase organs from aborted human fetuses to create “humanized mice” for HIV research.
These and related industries dominate and greatly influence politics. Working together with politicians, candidates are elected who support their agenda. Briefly check the number of politicians who receive political donations from Planned Parenthood. Then check their voting record.

Sacrificing the Dignity of Human Beings
We are witnessing scientific and technological advances which give society more power over nature and the human body. This power is translating into the power of an unethical market over the weak and the unborn. Big business and institutions view bodies as little more than containers of valuable body parts. In this process, society has begun to sacrifice the dignity of the human being. Actions such as abortion and the selling of aborted body parts allows society to change the definition of life and death to suit the requirements of body parts on demand. A very lucrative business!
Entering this “slippery slope” brings to mind Nazi medicine and research on human beings. The experiments carried out by Josef Mengele in the Auschwitz concentration camp were among the most radical demonstrations of research on human beings, including children. The entire world reacted and condemn this period of history. Yet, slowly but surely, science is entering this same slippery slope of research without any moral or ethical guidelines. Such research testing with children violates the international Nuremberg Code on multiple counts!
In the field of biomedical research, scientists are constantly pushing the edge of ethics. The largest democratic country in the world has entered this “slippery slope” business using its own citizens. Biden administration forces taxpayers to fund the trafficking of aborted baby body parts, says Family Research Council. “Using body parts from aborted babies to conduct research is a barbaric practice that should be unthinkable. Sadly, President Biden is instead promoting it. Proponents of aborted fetal tissue research willingly compromise ethics in the name of ‘science.’” states Connor Semelsberger, Director of Federal Affairs for Life and Human Dignity at Family Research Council. “The Biden administration is making it once again clear that it places no value on the inherent dignity of human life. Their actions deny the truth that every human life, born and unborn, possesses inherent dignity and deserves to be treated with respect,” concluded Tony Perkins, Family Research Council President.
What are baby parts used for? What is fetal tissue used for? What type of products use aborted babies? Who are the buyers? How large is the financial profit?
The use of fetal tissue for the purposes of biomedical research dates back to the late 1920’s. In order to conduct this type of research, biotechnology companies, universities, and medical centers collect these cells which are procured from aborted babies after their death. A tissue donation is removed, and the sample is brought to a lab, where the cells are replicated extensively. However, there are limitations; the samples degrade or exhaust over time. Thus the big demand for aborted fetuses.
A report from Life Dynamics describes a system devised within the abortion industry to make a financial profit from the growing market in fetal tissues, body parts, and organs. The system tries to circumvent legal restrictions on buying and selling human bodies or body parts. Three participants are commonly involved – the “seller,” the “buyer,” and the “wholesaler.” The wholesaler (or middleman) enters into a financial agreement with an abortion clinic (the seller) to pay a monthly “site-fee,” comparable to rent, to the clinic. In exchange, the wholesaler is allowed to position a retrieval agent inside the clinic, where he is given access to the dead fetuses and a workspace to harvest their parts. The buyer of the fetal parts is generally the agent for a medical school, pharmaceutical company, biotechnology company, or government agency.
The wholesaler’s profits can be substantial. There is generally a material difference between the amount that it costs him to harvest fetal parts and the amount that he is able to realize from the buyer. The most significant profit potential, however, rests with the end-user, the scientific researcher who resides in an educational or governmental institution or the product-development department a of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or cosmetics company. The prospects for profit here are virtually unlimited.
Every time you purchase mass-produced processed “food” from the likes of Kraft, PepsiCo, or Nestle, you’re choosing, whether you realize it or not, to feed your family not only genetically engineered poisons and chemical additives, but also various flavoring agents manufactured using the tissue of aborted human babies. List of corporations that use tissue from aborted babies in their products. The list shows an enormous market for aborted fetus body parts: not only large “food and soft drink” manufacturers, but also various “cosmetic/beauty” companies and “medicines/vaccines” research institutions.
In 2019, the Republicans on the special House panel investigating the transfer of fetal tissue from aborted babies presented evidence that breaks down the price per body part. FIRST: How many abortions are there? “Worldometer” estimates 42.7 million unborn babies killed in the womb worldwide in 2020, “The Christian Post” states over 42 million abortions occurred in 2020 and “WHO” says every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. The bodies of aborted babies are now sold at premium prices. SECOND: Do the math. According to U.S. House Select Investigative Panel, Middleman procurement businesses are companies that obtain tissue and other body parts from aborted babies and provide them to institutions or other organizations for research. Payments from researcher to procurement business in 2019:
- Fetal Brains – 1 each –> $3,340
- Human Fetal Tissue – 10 at $595 each –> $5,950
- Upper and Lower limbs with hands and feet –> $890
- Baby Skull Matched to Upper and Lower limbs –> $595
- 5 Fetal Livers –> $2,975
- 12 Fetal Hearts –> $7,140

In conclusion, what is the Catholic Church’s position on using aborted unborn children for research?
The Catholic Church has continually asserted that a human being must be respected as a person from the moment of conception, the very first instance of existence. The Declaration on Procured Abortion stated, “From the time that the ovum is fertilized, a new life is begun which is neither that of the father nor of the mother; it is rather the life of a new human being with his own growth. It would never be made human if it were not human already. To this perpetual evidence… modern genetic science brings valuable confirmation. It has demonstrated that, from the first instant, the program is fixed as to what this living being will be: a man, this individual-man with his characteristic aspects already well determined. Right from fertilization is begun the adventure of human life, and each of its great capacities requires time… to find its place and to be in a position to act” (#12-13). Moreover, we believe that almighty God creates and infuses an immortal soul, which truly gives each of us that identity of one made in His image and likeness. Therefore, we must respect the unborn child as a person whose life is sacred and whose rights must be protected.
The Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith addressed these issues in its Instruction on Respect for Human Life in Its Origin and on the Dignity of Procreation (Donum vitae), released in 1987. (These principles are affirmed in the Catechism, #2274-75.)
We have slipped into this mentality primarily because our civil law, as stated in Roe v. Wade, does not consider the unborn child a “person.” Moreover, the present capabilities of in vitro fertilization have compounded the problem, reducing a conceived child to “genetic material” isolated in a petri dish. Nevertheless, here again the Church asserts clear moral guidance concerning fetal research:
- Any production of human beings for the sake of experimentation, research, or the harvesting of organs is morally wrong. Such actions reduce a human being to simply disposable biological material. (Cf. Donum vitae, I, 5.)
- Any medical research or observation which jeopardizes the health or life of the unborn child is morally wrong. (Cf. Donum vitae, I, 5.)
- Procedures designed to influence the genetic inheritance of a child, which are not therapeutic, are morally wrong. To try to correct a genetic disorder, such as cystic fibrosis, is morally permissible, whereas to manipulate the genetic structure to produce human beings selected by sex or some other quality is wrong. Attempts to produce a “breed” of humans through cloning, twin fission, or parthenogenesis outside the context of marriage or parenthood is immoral. Such procedures violate the dignity of the human being, attacking his personal integrity and identity. (Cf. Donum vitae, I, 6.)
- “The corpses of human embryos and fetuses, whether they have been deliberately aborted or not, must be respected just as the remains of other human beings” (Donum vitae, I, 4). Any kind of commercial trafficking of corpses or organs in morally wrong.
These teachings reflect “Catholic common sense.” If we say, “Yes, the unborn child at the moment of conception is an unique individual, made in God’s image and likeness, with a body and a soul,” then these principles make sense. If we say, “No,” then we will permit uncontrolled research and plunge ourselves into the realm of genetic manipulation, organ harvesting and trafficking, human breeding, and unrestrained experimentation.

In the introduction to the book “The Lord”, by Romano Guardini, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger summarizes it well: “Our time is in many respects far different from that in which Romano Guardini lived and worked. But it is as true now as in his day that the peril of the Church, indeed of humanity, consists in bleaching out the image of Jesus Christ in an attempt to shape a Jesus according to our own standards, so that we do not follow Him in obedient discipleship but rather recreate Him in our own image! Yet still in our own day salvation consists only in our becoming “truly real.” And we can do that only when we discover anew the true reality of Jesus Christ and through Him discover the way of an upright and just life.”
